How to play
Buzz

Buzz is a game about bees, flowers and honey.

On your spinner can appear numbers, or three sort of bees, red, green and yellow. The red bee is a wild that can match a number in the same column, green can match a number anywhere on the board, yellow is a special one, it appears once per game, but you don’t know when.

The yellow bee can match a number anywhere on the board, above that, if you use the yellow bee to reveal the X3 multiplier, you gain 5000 extra points.
Somewhere hidden on the board are 3 multipliers, x1, x2 and x3. After you reveal such a multiplier all points you score will be multiplied with that multiplier. Thus e.g. when you have the x2 multiplier revealed and afterwards you reveal the x1 multiplier, from that moment all points will be multiplied with 1 instead of two.

In an ideal situation you manage to reveal the multipliers in the order x1, x2 and x3. Not revealing e.g. the x1 can be an option too, but then of course you miss the points for revealing that tile (and for the lines it is on).

These multipliers are hidden, but you can know where they are, there is a little honey spoon button on the game, click that button and it shows you where the multipliers are. You can use this button twice during the cause of a game.

Needless to say that you really, really should use the honey spoon. Not using it and relaying on luck will cost you a lot of games lost that could have easily be won.
Let’s explain the game the easy way, just playing one and see what happens.

Here to the left you see a Buzz game machine.

Above, the prize, X2, thus if I win this game I will earn the amount I payed it, multiplied by 2.

Below that the score to beat, 36501, thus I need to score more than 36501 points in order to win this game.

Below that the score, now showing the score the previous player reached, 51000, next to that the honey spoon and next to that the round number.

Below that the play board, and below that the price I can pay to play this game, in this case L$2. As you are used from this sort of games, when I pay it I can choose from 4 amounts, and if I want a fully different amount, the game machines with other amounts stand in a line next to this one.

I pay the game L$2, in order to start it.
Direct after the game was paid, it starts. An empty playboard is generated, the score is set to 0, the round is round 1, and also of great importance, I got 2 honey spoons to use.
Clicking this honey spoon will briefly show me where the multipliers (X1, X2 and X3) are hidden. That is important to know and you should always check this out and memorize that.

I click the honey spoon. To see what happens.
I see now where the multipliers are hidden.
Red is the X1 multiplier at 15.
Green is the X2 multiplier at 23.
Yellow is the X3 multiplier at 11.

It might be genetically, or perhaps I smoked too much marijuana my wild years, but whatever is the reason, I find it unpleasant and difficult to remember these 3 spots for the cause of the game and then again 3 different spots for the next game.

Thus, I do that different. I opened the program paint at my computer, with ALT+PrtSc I make a copy of the screen and with CTRL+V, I put that in paint. With 2 keystrokes and 2 mouse clicks I have the information standing next to my viewer, on my screen, much handier.

No, I don’t smoke marijuana anymore, for already many years I smoke nothing. Not smoking is a good habit. Though I still like the smell.

Back to the game, shall we..
The row below the play board, showing the numbers 9,11,25 and 36 is the spinner. If the spinner shows a number that is also on the board (or when it shows a bee) I can match that number on the board. I should not click the spinner itself before I am satisfied with what I did, because clicking the spinner moves the game to the next round.

There are 2 possible matches, 11 and 25.

11 is a bit a problem. Matching it would reveal the X3 multiplier, that is great, already having everything multiplied by 3 from the start of the game, but it also means I can forget about the 5000 points bonus for matching it with the yellow bee and would have a problem if I can match 15 or 23 during any next round.

I play 25, but ignore the 11, purposely not playing it.

After playing 25 I click on the spinner to move to the next round.
The next round: Matching one number gave me 500 points, we see we are in round number 2 now, on the spinner is a green bee.

I also have a match for the number 40. I should first play the green bee, and then the 40. The green bee will be used for the first match I make, thus clicking the 40 first will cost me the green bee.

In the previous round I sacrificed a match, not to already reveal the X3, that should not happen too often, playing the green wild on 15, to get rid of the X1, seems a good idea.

OK then, I play 15 and then 40. After that I click the spinner to move to the next round.
In the previous round I matched 2 extra numbers, thus 1000 extra points (2 times 500) are added to my score. 1500 is still way from 36501, but the heavy scoring is still ahead of us.

This round gives 3 possible matches, the numbers 4 and 23 and a red bee on the rightmost column.

I can match that red bee anywhere I want but on the same column. Thus 33, 35 and 39. As in all these games, the diagonal is often a good choice. The field 33 is just like 35 and 39 on both a vertical and a horizontal line, but it is also on a diagonal. Matching 33 gives thus more chance on scoring extra points than the other 2 options.

So, the red bee goes on 33, but hold on a bit...

One of the other matches is 23. As we have seen when using the honey spoon, 23 will reveal the X2 multiplier. Perfect! Then now we also know for sure I won’t have to skip a match to avoid revealing the X3, but ..everything I play will be multiplied by 2 after playing the 23, thus: Play the 23 first and then the 33 and 4!

Doing so will multiply the 500 points we get for the 33 and those for the 4 with 2, that is a 1000 points more then when playing first 33, then 4 and as last 23!!

At Buzz (or any game involving multipliers) not only watch what you play, but also the order in which you play!

Be aware that the X2 also applies on the matched field itself, thus this way we get 1000 points per match, for all 3 numbers, instead of 500.

I click 23, then 4 and then 33, after which I click the spinner to move to the next round.
The next round starts with 5000 points. You might have expected 4500 points, 1500 points we already had, plus 3 times 500 points, all 3 multiplied by 2, thus 1500+3x500x2= 1500+3000 = 4500.

On the spiner you see a flower. This flower gives 250 extra points, just like that. Since we have the x2 revealed, that 250 is multiplied by 2, and that brings us to a total of 5000 points.

You cannot do much about those flowers. You get one, or not. It doesn’t always have to be a good thing. A wild is often preferable above a flower, but hey, it is 500 extra points, so that is good.

This round I can play 3 and with the red wild choose between 35 and 39. Although 35 might be a slightly better choice, I choose 39. I don’t play perfect, here I made one of my few itches.

Although you can forget about this, it is not important, but 35 is slightly a better choice than 39 because when I get wilds I more likely play them on 14 than on 5. Thus the chance that 5 remains unmatched at the end of the game is much larger than the chance 14 remains unmatched. If so, and there is also an unmatched field remaining at the right most column, I am better of if that is on the same line as 5. Thus by choosing 35 instead of 39 I increase my chances to make one horizontal line (and thus 1000 points, multiplied by 2 or 3) extra.

Right, now you know. It is pretty hard to play these games perfect. I simply click 3 and then 39, followed by the spinner to move to the next round.
This round brings the yellow bee. Each game you do get 1 yellow bee, you don’t know in which round but you can be sure you will get it. Exactly once, every game.

The yellow bee can be played as a wild, everywhere on the board, but if I do play it to reveal the X3 multiplier, I get a bonus of 5000 points.

As you remembered from earlier on when I was talking about marijuana, and as I can see on my screen dump, the X3 multiplier is at 11.

This round I have no more matches (if I had, be careful, at the first match you play the yellow bee will be used), so I click the 11, enjoy my 5000 extra points and click the spinner, see what next round brings.
We start this round with 14250 points.
– 7000 we already had at the previous round.
– 5000 for using the yellow be at the X3
– 1500 = 500 x3 for matching the number.
– 750 = 250×3 for the flower on the spinner.
That sums up to 14250.

This round I can play without much thinking, there is only one match to make, the 6. There is nothing I have to take into consideration with multipliers or so anymore, so I click the 6 and move on to the next round.
Our score went up from 14250 to 18750, not only 500 for matching the number but also the diagonal (from 6 to 33, from below left to up right) is completed. A line gives another 1000 points, and that multiplied by 3 of course.
14250+1000×3+500×3=14250=4500= 18750

This round I can choose where to play the red bee, 14 or 16. 14 is the far better choice, it is on a diagonal. So I play 14 and move to the next round.
Don’t play 16!!

Or at least, not yet. The green wild will be used at the first match you make, thus first figure out where to place it. Then play 16.

The green wild should be at 22 or 30, either of these is good, the other 2 options are significantly worse. That is because although both of the other 2 do make 2 lines, where 22 or 30 only make 1 line, score will be still not enough to win. For all 4 possible matches, the following is true:
If in the following rounds one more match can be made, it does not matter which match, the score will go above 36501 and thus this game is won.

And thus 22 or 30 are the better choice, 5 or 35 would fill a column. What if a red bee will be given on exactly that column? If I now play 22 or 30 a red bee on either of 3 columns will be a win. If I now play e.g. 5, a red bee on either of 2 columns will be a win.

With 2 rounds to go and only one match needed, things look good. But, play 22 or 30 to make them look even better.

Thus I match 22 and then 16, afterwards on to the next round. Victory is near.
And it is done!

Matching one number is already enough, but let’s match both, to not only win but also win with a big score.

I click 30 and 35, that might as well have been 5 and 35, it doesn’t matter, and go to the next round.
Yeah, the last round could have also given a 5. That would have boosted my score, 3000 for the full board, 2000 for two lines, 500 for the match, 5500, that multiplied by 3 = 16500, ending on 64500 points.

Who cares though, I won!! We won!! A click on the spinner and the machine will start throwing out happy flower confetti and, perhaps even more important, pay me my winnings.

Now, it is your turn. Try a few games of Buzz, you’ll get the drill rather quickly. The game is fun.

You’ll notice variation as you sometimes can get that X3 soon, sometimes late, sometimes you might be better off matching it and try to avoid the fields with the X1 and X2, other times you skip a number. Sometimes the game is generous with bees, sometimes less..
